Peter Thomas Roth's Animal Testing Policy

Peter Thomas Roth’ animal testing policy can be found on their website within their FAQ section.

The first statement regarding animal testing is in relation to the question; Do you test on animals? Their reply is:

Peter Thomas Roth is produced in a manner that is animal cruelty free. All PTR products follow PCPC / FDA / EUCA (Personal Care Products Council / Food & Drug Administration / European Union Consumer Affairs) testing guidelines that do not allow the use of animals for any safety testing procedures.

The above statement makes it seem that Peter Thomas Roth is a cruelty-free brand and do not allow for any animal testing, however, please read on.

Is Peter Thomas Roth Sold in mainland China?

Yes, Peter Thomas Roth is sold in stores in mainland China, meaning that this brand is NOT cruelty-free.

At the very end of their section on animal testing within their FAQ section they answer the question; Is your company animal-cruelty free? Their reply is:

Peter Thomas Roth does not test any of our formulas or raw materials on animals but we believe in total transparency and will not claim that for the following reasons:

1. We cannot be certain that a raw material supplier has not now or at some time in the past tested an ingredient on animals. We do not knowingly purchase ingredients that have been tested on animals and inquire before purchasing ingredients but some staple ingredients that have been used in products for years may have been tested on animals in the past.
2. We do sell our products in China and some other countries that still do test on animals; though it is our understanding that China is moving towards stopping this practice. We are not alone in selling to China; nearly every major cosmetic company sells there. Also to be noted are that many major beauty retailers conduct business there including QVC and Sephora.

As they have stated on their website. This brand will allow the authorities to test their products on animals if the law requires them to do so. The Chinese authorities require foreign brands sold in stores in China to allow them to test their products, and even their ingredients, on animals. Which means since Peter Thomas Roth chooses to sell their products in China, they cannot be considered cruelty-free.

It is also very disheartening that Peter Thomas Roth make excuses and say that almost every major beauty brand choose to support animal testing and choose to sell in China. As this is NOT true. Yes many big beauty brands do sell in China, but there are many, many large and ethical brands who chose to remain cruelty-free by NOT selling in China.

It is a pity that Peter Thomas Roth have chosen to put profit before ethics when it comes to animal testing. Luckily for us there are many other beauty brands who do not.
