L'Occitane's Animal Testing Policy

L’Occitane state their animal testing policy in great detail on their site, this is encouraging to see a company that is transparent about animal testing. It can be read in full here, but I have linked the important section below:

The L’OCCITANE Group has been against animal testing for more than 40 years and we have never tested our products, active ingredients or raw materials on animals at any point in the product development or manufacturing process.

The Group is fundamentally against animal testing of beauty products on a worldwide basis. In China, where our products are retailed, the local Chinese authorities request that some cosmetic products sold on the Chinese market are tested. They view it as the best way to safeguard consumer safety in China.

We do not conduct these tests. They are done by Chinese laboratories that have been approved by local authorities on a limited animal panel.

The above animal policy statement confirms that L’Occitane is NOT a cruelty-free brand, because they choose to sell their products in countries which enforce animal testing by law (i.e. mainland China).

Is L'Occitane Sold in mainland China?

As L’Occitane animal testing policy state, their products are sold in stores in mainland China, meaning that this brand is NOT cruelty-free.

This brand will allow the authorities in China to test their products on animals because there the law requires them to do so. The Chinese authorities require foreign brands sold in stores in China to allow them to test their products, and even their ingredients, on animals. Which means since L’Occitane chooses to sell their products in China, they cannot be considered cruelty-free.
