Does Origins Test on Animals? Are they Cruelty-Free?

Origins is a beauty brand that sells natural skincare essentials and makeup products. They are currently owned by beauty giant Estée Lauder, and this parent company is not cruelty-free. However, are they themselves a cruelty-free brand? And do they allow their products to be sold in countries which enforce animal testing (i.e. mainland China)?

Origins' Animal Testing Policy

Origins’ animal testing policy can be found on their website within their FAQ section.

I have linked their animal testing policy in full below:

Our belief is that science can end animal testing.

We don’t believe in testing on animals. We believe in the power of nature and the proof of science. And we know science has proven it’s unnecessary to test products for safety on animals. So we don’t do it. Instead, we use volunteers to test out our products. And they help us make sure everything is totally safe for you.

Some countries where Origins is sold require animal testing on all imported cosmetics as part of their regulator safety process. As a brand rooted in science, we’re doing everything we can to put an end to animal testing worldwide through science. That’s why we’re partnering with The Institute for In Vitro Sciences ( in their mission to ensure alternative testing becomes the global standard.

The above animal testing policy statement confirms that Origins is NOT a cruelty-free brand, because they choose to sell their products in countries which enforce animal testing by law (i.e. mainland China).

Is Origins Sold in mainland China?

Yes, Origins is sold in stores in mainland China, meaning that this brand is NOT cruelty-free.

As they have stated on their website. The brand will allow the authorities to test their products on animals if the law requires them to do so. The Chinese authorities require foreign brands sold in stores in China to allow them to test their products, and even their ingredients, on animals. Which means since Origins chooses to sell their products in China, they cannot be considered cruelty-free.
