Does Clean & Clear Test on Animals? Are they Cruelty-Free?

Clean & Clear is one of the best known acne treatment brands. Specifically made for teens who suffer from the dreaded breakouts. They are affordable and run relatable ads targeting teens around the globe, and seem to help many gain clear skin.

However, we know you are wondering about one question.

Are they a cruelty-free brand?

Scroll down to find out.

Clean & Clear's Animal Testing Policy

Clean & Clear’s animal testing policy can be found easily on their website. They have it labelled clearly as Animal Testing Policy on their homepage. It is always great to see a brand being transparent with their consumers, and not try and hide from the fact that they do allow animal testing to take place.

I have linked their policy in full below:

We want you to feel good about how we make Clean & Clear® products. You can only do that if you have the facts. The fact is, Clean & Clear® doesn’t conduct animal testing of our cosmetic products anywhere in the world, except in the rare situation where governments or laws require it. At Clean & Clear®, we won’t ever compromise on the quality or safety of our products or stop seeking alternatives to animal testing.

The above animal policy statement confirms that Clean & Clear is NOT a cruelty-free brand, because they choose to sell their products in countries which enforce animal testing by law (i.e. mainland China).

Is Clean & Clear Sold in mainland China?

Yes, Clean & Clear is sold in stores in mainland China, meaning that this brand is NOT cruelty-free.

As they have stated on their website. The brand will allow the authorities to test their products on animals if the law requires them to do so. The Chinese authorities require foreign brands sold in stores in China to allow them to test their products, and even their ingredients, on animals. Which means since Clean & Clear chooses to sell their products in China, they cannot be considered cruelty-free.
